Let me tell you the story of how I scavenged a cinema.

It all started when

…two artist friends of mine moved into a huge, run down building at the edge of town. It has holes in the roof and the vibe of a butchery/laboratory but with some scavenged carpet, free couches from the internet and a popcorn machine, it slowly turned into a cinema.

…my beamer and projection screen, I had to choose the first movie for my scavenged cinema. Not any movie could exist in this space. White tiles, cement floors and plastic chairs do not work with Truffaut or Malick. Instead, I needed to stand on the shoulders of more obscure giants. My choice fell on Daisies (1966) by Czechoslovakian filmmaker Věra Chytilová. This surreal tale of feminist anarchy and hedonism was the first movie to screen at the Film Club.

After setting up

The Film Club

…has seen four official instalments until now. All have allowed me to research, program and introduce films, curate additional activities and contributions by guests and connect with people about the shared evening. Visit the Film Club Archive for a full list of movies and accompanying experiences.

Future Plans

…include a silent disco movie, a horror movie sleepover and a short film festival. I want to continue experimenting with the space, the setting and the curated program. As my network grows, I hope to host more guest speakers and facilitate discussions.

Elena's plant portraits

When I showed Invasion of the Body Snatchers, I asked the audience to bring their houseplants to make a jungle. As a thank you, Elena drew plant portraits for everyone to take home.

Joran's experimental soundtrack

Before screening On Gaku, I wanted to show a short film because I love shorts before the main film. Since On Gaku is about sound, I chose a short without dialogue and asked a Jazz singer to perform a new soundtrack and ambiance for it.

Do you have a movie to screen, a performance to pair, or a couch to get rid of?
